Ansaldo Energia and ABB have won an order €70 mln by Terna

| Press releases

The consortium between Ansaldo Energia and ABB has been awarded an order worth €70 million by Terna to increase the security and support the quality of the Italian electric power system

Ansaldo Energia and ABB have won an order worth €70 million from Terna after a Europe-wide tender operation.

The scope of supply of Ansaldo Energia, which heads the Joint Venture, includes the design, supply, commissioning and maintenance of three asynchronous compensator sets rated 250 MVAR each, two in Matera and one in Manfredonia. Commissioning will be completed in 2020.

Synchronous compensators are a special application of electric generators and are connected to the Terna transmission network to increase the inertia of the system, its short-circuit power and stability. This is a particularly significant goal in an electric system where the  contribution of conventional gridconnected generating capacity has decreased in recent years, while renewable sources characterized by a discontinuous power supply on the rise, particularly in the south of the country.

ABB will supply, install and commission the entire electric system to connect the synchronous compensator set to the grid, including the protection and control systems, plus the monitoring and diagnostic solutions.

This project unites Italian excellence and specialist expertise in rotating machines and electric and automation systems.

The contract also includes maintenance and assistance activities for a period of ten years.
