GT36: the energy giant

The maxi H class GT36 gas turbine produced in the Genoa workshop is today the most powerful piece of machinery of Ansaldo Energia product portfolio and the largest gas turbine ever built in Italy.

Nicknamed ‘Monte Bianco’, as the top in the European power sector, this turbine, in the 50Hz version presented today, reaches 538 MW (ISO conditions) of power: this means that when in operation it supports the electricity consumption of almost 500,000 households…a big city like Genoa!

The turbine rotor weighs 150 tons, while the case containing it weighs 370 tons: 520 tons in total, as much as 400 cars. It has a length of almost 13.5 meters, same as a large tourist coach bus. Placed vertically, it would be as high as a four-storey building and…since this GT36 was born under the new Ponte San Giorgio ... it would take three, stacked one on top of the other, to reach the height of the new bridge.
