GT36 sequential combustion technology achieves 100% hydrogen

| News

A major milestone towards decarbonization

As part of the FLEX4H2 project, Ansaldo Energia has successfully demonstrated the ability of a hydrogen optimized combustor for the GT36 gas turbine to operate on 100% hydrogen fuel.  GT36 sequential combustion technology achieves flexible operation from 0 to 100% hydrogen in high pressure tests.

The successful testing of the GT36 combustor prototypes took place at a dedicated test facility in Cologne, Germany. The tests highlighted the combustor's ability to seamlessly switch between natural gas and hydrogen, demonstrating its remarkable fuel and operational flexibility. The innovative sequential combustion technology allows GT36 to operate on a wide range of hydrogen-natural gas blends, ensuring its adaptability to the continuously evolving needs of current and future power generation markets.

This achievement posts a fundamental technology milestone for large heavy duty gas turbines, paving the way towards a more sustainable and decarbonized power sector. Ansaldo Energia's unwavering commitment to innovation and its position as a leader in the development of hydrogen fueled powertrains, strongly promotes a future where clean energy plays a central role in powering our world
