ANSALDO ENERGIA TO SUPPLY SYNCHRONOUS CONDENSER FOR UK GRID STABILITY PROJECT

| News | Press releases

The agreement has been signed with TSK UK

Ansaldo Energia has signed a contract with TSK UK to supply one synchronous condenser model TRY-L63 flywheel FW 19-63 (157 tons, 10,7 meters) and auxiliary components, which will be delivered to Statkraft’s Necton Greener Grid Park, a grid stability project currently under construction in Norfolk, in the United Kingdom. The agreement also includes commissioning and training for the facility’s operating personnel. Necton Greener Grid Park was awarded a contract by NESO (National Energy System Operator) as part of its Stability Pathfinder Programme, in 2022. It is aimed at strengthening Great Britain’s electricity grid as variable renewable energy sources play an increasingly significant role.

Synchronous condensers provide critical grid services such as voltage regulation, reactive power, short-circuit power and inertia. These capabilities are becoming ever more vital as renewable generation and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) connections expand. With fast dynamic response, synchronous condensers are the well-proved and robust solution to ensure grid reliability and energy security under fluctuating conditions.

“We are delighted to collaborate with Statkraft and Ansaldo Energia on such an innovative and meaningful project, contributing together to solutions that reinforce the stability and resilience of Great Britain’s electricity system. This Project will be Statkraft’s largest synchronous compensator scheme to date and will be key to increase the deployment of renewable energy to the GB grid.”, said Rubén Ondina, TSK UK Projects Director.

“The partnership with TSK UK and Necton Grid Solutions underscores our commitment to enabling grid stability solutions in a markets scenario where renewable penetration is rapidly accelerating,” - said Stefano Gianatti, EVP Thermal New Units of Ansaldo Energia. - “Through this project, we are leveraging our extensive expertise in synchronous condenser technology to support the UK’s energy transition goals.”

Ansaldo Energia entered the synchronous condenser market in 2014 and has since built a strong track record, delivering high-performance units optimised for stand-alone deployment or integration with conventional power plants. Backed by decades of engineering experience and a proven portfolio, Ansaldo Energia delivers robust, flexible solutions designed for reliability and ease of maintenance, supporting operators worldwide as they navigate the energy transition.
