For the development of the new nuclear in Europe

Development of Small Modular Reactor technologies and involvement in the entire chain of existing reactors, including EPR1200: this is the core of the cooperation agreement signed today in Paris between Ansaldo Energia, Ansaldo Nucleare, EDF and NUWARD.
For the Group, Fabrizio Fabbri, Chief Executive Officer of Ansaldo Energia and Riccardo Casale, Chief Executive Officer of Ansaldo Nucleare, were attending.
This step finalizes the signing of the letter of intent of 6 March which had the purpose of defining the principles of collaboration for the development of nuclear new build in Europe. Among the objectives, also the start of a reflection on the possible role of the new nuclear in the Italian energy transition.
Different forms of collaboration will be tested in ongoing projects which could see Ansaldo Nucleare in the role of key partner in the design of the new reactor technology and supplier of special systems and components. The whole Ansaldo Energia Group may be involved in the supply of turbines for existing and future technology plants.
“With this agreement, the Ansaldo Energia Group becomes a key player in the development of the new nuclear, either in the design of a new reactor technology or in the integrated construction of plants also based on technologies that are already operational” said Fabrizio Fabbri, Chief Executive Officer of Ansaldo Energia.
Small Modular Reactors are a technology of particular importance in the development of nuclear energy and energy transition, thanks to their operational flexibility and efficiency which makes them ideal as a complementary source of electricity in support of renewables. With an expected power of about 300 MW, each reactor will be able to supply about 200,000 households.
“This agreement highlights the international acknowledgement of the skills of Ansaldo Energia Group and Ansaldo Nucleare, which confirms itself as a leader in a highly dynamic sector at a global level” said Riccardo Casale, Chief Executive Officer of Ansaldo Nucleare.
