Ansaldo Energia News: new Agreement for a GT36 turbine in Germany

| News | Press releases

Ansaldo Energia has been chosen once again to guide Germany in its decarbonization path thanks to its turbines ready to burn hydrogen

Ansaldo Energia has signed a contract with Tecnicas Reunidas and an important German utility for the construction of a hydrogen-ready combined cycle power plant. This signature follows an agreement signed with RWE in July for the conversion of the Weisweiler lignite power plant, as part of the German decarbonization plan.

Ansaldo Energia will supply the entire power island, the heart of the plant, which includes a GT36 gas turbine and related generator, a steam turbine and related generator, HRSG (boiler), condenser and auxiliary systems.

The GT36, with a combined cycle power of 800 MW, is able to power over 500,000 homes and boasts unparalleled operational flexibility.  The GT36 is already prepared to operate with a 50% hydrogen mixture, thanks to its exclusive sequential combustion system, with the possibility of switching to 100% hydrogen.

The contract will become operational after Germany has finalized the regulatory framework ensuring the economic viability of the H2-ready gas-fired power plants, which the country is currently working on, and after receiving all necessary authorizations.

“This second agreement signed in Germany makes us particularly proud” says Stefano Gianatti, Ansaldo Energia Executive Vice President New Units “because it reconfirms Ansaldo Energia as a strategic and recognized player for the decarbonization path in Europe.”
