Ansaldo Energia, Ansaldo Nucleare and NUWARD have signed today a Joint Declaration of Intent at the World Nuclear Exhibition (WNE) 2025 ongoing in Paris, marking a further step in the NUWARD Small Modular Reactor (SMR) program. The declaration—signed together with Arabelle Solutions, Framatome and Tractebel—reinforces a coordinated path to accelerate development and deployment plans for NUWARD. This milestone follows the first collaboration agreement between Ansaldo Energia, Ansaldo Nucleare, EDF and NUWARD signed in July 2023.
NUWARD is developing a new generation of water cooled SMR designed to deliver reliable, flexible and affordable low carbon energy. The platform will provide both electricity and heat for multiple applications— such as industrial applications and district heating—serving customers in Europe and worldwide.
This agreement further strengthens collaboration among the partners, building on previous cooperation and paving the way for the next phases of the program. Ansaldo Energia Group’s ambition is to contribute not only to the nuclear island but also to the power island, leveraging its engineering and industrial capabilities to maximize value for clients.
Daniela Gentile, CEO of Ansaldo Nucleare, commented:
“The NUWARD project will provide European citizens and industries with reliable, secure, and competitive energy. Ansaldo Energia and Ansaldo Nucleare aim to contribute to the development of this program by leveraging their technological and manufacturing expertise, as well as the strong capabilities of the Italian supply chain”.
Julien Garrel, Executive President of NUWARD, commented:
“NUWARD SMR is more than a technological innovation — it’s a European response to the global demand for reliable, flexible, and low-carbon energy. With strong industrial partnerships as Ansaldo Energia and Ansaldo Nucleare and recognition from the European SMR Alliance, we are building a multi-energy platform that serves both electricity and heat needs, for a wide range of applications across Europe and beyond”.
