Ansaldo Energia and Kilshane Energy announce their collaboration on a new 300 MW energy security project located in Kilshane, Dublin. This strategic initiative will play a key role in strengthening Ireland’s electric infrastructure and supporting the country’s energy security and transition.
As part of the agreement, Ansaldo Energia will supply Kilshane Energy Ltd. with a cutting-edge AE94.3A gas turbine in open cycle configuration, along with the associated generator. This advanced technology will be at the heart of a highly flexible peaking plant, ensuring grid stability under all conditions. With commissioning scheduled for 2028, the new power station will represent a significant milestone in Ireland’s energy landscape, delivering reliable capacity while complementing the growth of renewable sources. This partnership reflects both companies’ commitment to energy security, innovation, and the transition to a low-carbon future.
The AE94.3A gas turbine stands out for its outstanding operational flexibility, proven reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Its ability to respond swiftly and dynamically to fluctuations in grid demand makes it an ideal solution to complement variable and non-dispatchable renewable energy sources. With more than 125 units sold worldwide and over 5 million equivalent operating hours accumulated, the AE94.3A gas turbine has become a trusted choice for utilities. Over the past two years, it has experienced a marked increase in market demand, reflecting its alignment with the shifting priorities and challenges of the global power generation sector.
“This project is about resilience and flexibility,” said Brian McMullan, Project Lead for Kilshane Energy Ltd. “As Ireland moves towards a net zero energy system, we need reliable backup generation to complement the growing renewable fleet. The technology from Ansaldo Energia is not only flexible and robust, but it also offers a future pathway to decarbonisation, with the potential for hydrogen blending and other low-carbon fuels. Kilshane Energy is committed to supporting Ireland’s sustainable energy future, and this partnership with Ansaldo Energia reinforces its long-term strategy to deliver flexible, dependable generation as part of the national transition.”
"We are proud to play a role in this strategic project and sincerely thank Kilshane Energy Ltd. for placing their trust in our technology and know-how," said Stefano Gianatti, Executive Vice President Thermal New Units at Ansaldo Energia. "The AE94.3A gas turbine continues to prove its value in today’s rapidly evolving energy landscape. With its best-in-class flexibility and reliability, it is ideally suited to support Ireland’s energy security while advancing the country’s decarbonization goals."
