FRAME 5001

Ansaldo Energia's Multi-OEM Gas Turbine team offers an extensive portfolio of products and services for Frame 5 heavy-duty gas turbines.

Conversions, Modifications and Upgrades

We offer:

  • performance upgrades by installing advanced hot-gas-path components, compressor blades and inner barrel
  • emission reduction solutions with our water and steam injection systems
  • automated gas turbine tuning with our AutoTune system to maintain emissions and combustion dynamics

We have extensive experience on delivering products and services on Frame 5001 gas turbines:

  • Performed more than 100 conversions, modifications and upgrades projects


Our Gas Turbine Optimization Package (GTOP) enables increased operational flexibility while maximizing the performance of your gas turbine that can be tailored to your operational needs. GTOP enables the possibility to run in maintenance mode or performance mode. Maintenance mode will result in extended maintenance intervals up to 32,000 hours, or even 40,000 hours, while performance mode will result in higher power output (up to 7%) and improved heat rate (up to 3%) with a 24,000-hour maintenance interval. With our AutoTune system you can switch between these modes providing you operational flexibility. Power as you need it!

Hot Gas Path parts

Current designed hardware with structured improvements to the hot gas path hardware results in improved efficiency as a result of improved sealing and clearances, upgraded materials and additional cooling.

Combustion system

By combining the key benefits of Ansaldo Thomassen's T-DLN1 and PSM's LEC-III™ systems, our GTOP combustion system has the ability to offer not only extended maintenance intervals, but also a wider range of operating profiles. 


Ansaldo Energia's AutoTune system automatically tunes engine operating parameters to maintain emissions and combustion dynamics within specified limits under varying ambient conditions, engine deterioration, and while using a range of natural gas or liquefied natural gas.


We offer the latest generation of heavy-duty gas turbine controllers, Ansaldo Thomassen's TC-7, covering every aspect of turbine performance. Based on the proven design of Simatics PCS7®, the TC-7 is a digital control system that takes advantage of an open-architecture design and non-proprietary hardware, for seamless integration in existing or new DCS systems.

This state-of-the-art approach has been implemented throughout the system – right down to concerns for safety, where the TC-7 has TÜV approval and meets the requirements of SIL 3 according to IEC 61508 for safety-related turbine functions. This control system also offers the hardware and software flexibility your power plant needs to remain relevant, reliable – and, above all – profitable.

The TC-7 can be easily exchanged with a Mark I, Mark II, Mark IV or Mark V and no mechanical support change is needed. Electrical and instrumentation changes are minimized. The cable entrance is at the bottom therefore no additional marshalling boxes are needed for cable extension. Instrumentation can be adapted to fulfil SIL requirements. Approved flame detectors and the gas nozzle start pressure switch are common instruments to be adapted.

Currently we have over 15 TC-7 control systems installed worldwide.


We offer customers rotor management solutions that capitalizes on our engineering expertise while utilizing our design history of heavy-duty gas turbine units and all its iterations, for all B/E/F-class gas turbines.

Rotor Life Assessment (RLA)

Specialized inspections and analysis are required to determine the condition of the rotor. Based on extensive experience, we have developed all procedures to determine the condition of the rotor. After dismantling of the turbine section, the different rotor components are inspected using Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), hardness measurement tests, dimensional checks, replica tests and bore sonic investigation. Depending of the results follow-up actions will be determined.

Rotor Lifetime Extension (RLE)

In case an exact lifetime expectancy is required we can make use of our Lifetime Extension (LTE) model. With the advancements in computing power, material properties, fracture mechanic methodologies, and inspection techniques, it is now possible to assess the potential to run rotors beyond their original published limits. When repair indications are found, we can offer replacement discs and components to achieve longer life and higher efficiency. We have the capability to replace damaged sections of the rotor with our own manufactured components.

New Rotors

Ansaldo Thomassen can manufacture new rotors for Frame 6B and Frame 9E gas turbines with high quality, competitive pricing and lead time.

Sourcing and Repair of Pre-owned Rotors

As we can determine the lifetime of a heavy-duty gas turbine rotor, repair it and even manufacture rotor components, all knowledge and resources are available to get pre-owned rotors back to operational conditions again.

We are very experienced in rotor works. We have performed over more than 450 rotor overhaul jobs on different frame sizes.


Flexibility is key to supporting future energy generation. The growth in renewable solar and wind energy has emphasized the need for flexibility. Flexibility to reliably balance the load on the energy grid with the ability to rapidly adjust output while using cost effective fuels which also minimize carbon output.

Gas turbines with a retrofit for hydrogen operation offers a low carbon solution to support the stability of the energy grid. Our High Hydrogen Gas Turbine Retrofit project provides a solution capturing the needs for energy storage, in the form of hydrogen, and flexible power generation. Making use of the existing installed gas turbine base with a modest retrofit provides a compelling and cost-effective solution.

The major objective of the High Hydrogen Retrofit Project is to develop a cost-effective ultra-low emission (sub 9ppm NOx and CO) combustion system retrofit for existing installed gas turbines in the output range of 1MW to 300MW. At the center of this innovative high-technology project is the patented and novel aerodynamic trapped vortex FlameSheet™ combustion technology platform. Fuel flexibility and stable operation from 100% natural gas to 100% hydrogen and any mixture thereof, is a key requirement.
